A Crude Awakening…
No sooner are we seeing $4 dollar a gallon gasoline become as common as blades of grass— but now comes word that we could be paying DOUBLE that amount in the very near future….
Financial writer Dan Dorfman was the first to broach the subject here in his syndicated column quoting both an industry analyst as well as the chairman of a Houston-based energy firm…. He said the men foresaw oil hitting $200 dollars a barrel—which would translate into $10 a gallon gasoline for the United States.
With-in hours of that story appearing, OPEC president Chakib Khelil was quoted here as saying he saw NO REASON why oil won’t hit $200 a barrel— and OPEC would do little to stop the trend.
It wasn’t that long ago, I was railing about bottled water costing $10 a gallon—saying how fortunate I felt that I was paying a whole lot less for gasoline…
~~~~ DECEMBER 5, 2007 ~~~~
The other day—I stopped at my local gas station to fill up—and because I was thirsty decided to grab a bottle of water.
As I gazed at the bright orange price tag—I began to do some calculations…. I was paying $1.59 for 20 ounces of water. Now there’s 128 ounces in a gallon. 20 goes into 128 exactly 6.4 times. Multiply 6.4 by 1.59 and I was paying a whopping $10.17 a GALLON for what is essentially tap water.
(In the interest of full disclosure I actually had to do the math on a piece of scrap paper I found in the car—-I’m not smart enough to do all that in my head)
Of course— there is ONE upside to the cost of bottled water.
At the price I’m paying right now—it makes 3-dollar-a-gallon gas look like a bargain!
~~~~~~~~~~
Now gasoline is headed for that same price range…. AAARGGH!
I know what you’re going to say about $10 a gallon gasoline. Over in Europe, they pay about that price.
And it’s true.
The British are currently paying £5.00 gallon… (With a pound worth about two American dollars—they’re at the ten dollar mark now.)
But, the difference is they drive smaller, much more fuel efficient cars—and they don’t use them for the kind of transport we do here. Consequently, they don’t fill-up as frequently.
The average American household budget is already strapped by $4.00 a gallon gas—and if it gets much higher —the consequences will become serious for all…
Those in power must recognize it is time for action.
Swift, fast action.
BEFORE the situation reaches crisis proportions.

Yeah the gas prices are going freaking crazy. we are at $3.75 in upstate ny for low grade. I typically don’t go nuts on cashiers but the other day I graciously went in to pay my 3.75 a gallon and asked for a lottery ticket. she said she needed to see my id. ok I am in my late thirties and do not look 18 but i lost it a little with the F bomb a few times. it really wasnt the ID that was a problem. I was already tense over the gas prices. I am currently offsetting the increase by selling anti high gas prices bumper stickers on ebay. they are selling pretty good and can be made with a PC and 50.00 printer from Walmart. Slavenomore
BETWEEN the LINES REPLIES: winning the lottery may be the only way ANY of us can pay for gas in the near future.
LOVE your bumper sticker idea…. It’ll be interesting to see how many people reading this will copy the idea !
