The Death Of Us….
Across the country—states are once again preparing to start executions in the wake of the 7-2 Supreme Court decision regarding the use of a toxic cocktail to kill condemned prisoners.
And, while this decision will no doubt renew the debate over the death penalty—we’ve yet to actually have executions broadcast for public consumption…
But, that’s about to change….
A Japanese radio station is going to air a tape of an actual execution.
In this case—it is a hanging. As you can read here, the audio includes the sound of the rope stretching as the prisoner is hanged.
Now—some will say—it’s ONLY radio—you can’t see it…
But, radio is the theatre of the mind—and the mental image can be way more intense…
Besides—we’re slowly breaking down the barriers about videos of executions…
Remember the Saddam Hussein video that flew around the Internet?
Not everyone who watched it was interested in crime and punishment.
For a good many, it was a twisted form of amusement.
Back in 2001, in his book, “Napalm & Silly Putty,” comedian George Carlin sarcastically predicted the day when executions would be put on TV as regularly scheduled programming for mass entertainment..
He said:
…”put it on TV every night with sponsors… complete with slow motion and instant replay…I believe if you make capital punishment a little more entertaining, and market it correctly, you could raise enough money to save social security.”
Although it sounds absurd when you read it—doesn’t it seem like we’re slowly sliding closer and closer to that every day?
