There’s No Place Like Gnome….

There’s a growing cult of light-hearted fun that’s becoming more mainstream every day….

I’m talking about the cult to free garden Gnomes from their imprisonment as lawn ornaments and garden decorations…

I recall a news story several years back where a couple thought their garden Gnome was stolen.

Within a week or so—they began receiving letters postmarked from various locations around the world. Inside, a picture of their Gnome at some famous landmark—like the Grand Canyon, or the Eiffel Tower.

This went on for over a year—before the Gnome one day mysteriously returned home with a note saying he’d finally satisfied his wanderlust…

oppressed-gnome.pngSince that time—scores of “Gnome liberation groups” have sprung up… Most of them run by practical jokers who take the Gnomes on trips and send their owners pictures much like the original Gnome “kidnappers.”.

There are a number of websites devoted to “freeing the gentle creatures”. This one linked here has its tongue so firmly planted in its cheek—it almost sounds believable when it calls for the elimination of big box home improvement stores which sell “garden enslavement tools”…

travelocity-gnome.png The Gnome fascination has even entered the world of advertising with Travelocity’s roaming gnome TV commercials…

Now, a colleague of mine has joined the craze.

And he’s started a blog, linked here, to highlight his Gnome’s adventures. It’s pretty light reading because it just consists of photographs of his Gnome at various locations.

And since he’s a news photographer—his job gives him ample opportunity to take his Gnome on many adventures.

All of this got me to thinking—if i grow a beard, wear a pointy hat—and stand outside in my garden for a while—do you think anyone would mistake me for a Gnome and take ME on a bunch of free trips around the world?

Hey—it’s worth a try.
