His Cross To Bear…
There’s been a lot of anger directed at Mike Huckabee’s Christmas TV commercial with folks railing about the symbolism of the so-called “floating cross” in the background that was created by lighting a bookcase behind him…
Sigmund Freud once said, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” And sometimes, a bookcase may just a bookcase.
Some believe Huckabee’s message is aimed the evangelicals telling them to vote for him—because he’s one of them.
Let me take a wild guess here— but I’m thinking the evangelicals ALREADY know what he stands for—so to make a TV commercial for them is sort of like preaching to the choir.
To me, the spot is filled with of buzz words and concepts of the kind an ad executive would pitch in an effort to get his client noticed.
I can almost hear the dialog in my head:
AD EXECUTIVE #1 : Mike baby— there are so many candidates—we gotta do something to separate you from the clutter… We need something different baby. Something unique!
HUCKABEE: (sarcasticaly) Wadda want me to do? Wish ‘em Merry Christmas?
AD EXECUTIVE #2: That’s IT!!!
With that in mind—watch the spot—and see if you can’t hear buzz phrases…
Others wonder WHY the bookcase behind him was highlighted…I’m guessing some lighting guy told the cameraman the background was too dark and Huckabee was fading into it……So they hit it with a key light to brighten it up and remove the shadows.
Of course—if you’re Machiavellian you might say the cross story was invented by Huckabee’s own people and leaked it to a “friendly” reporter to intentionally create reams of publicity for their candidate as he scoffed at the notion of a subliminal message.
Or perhaps—A Christmas message is just a Christmas message.
Hmmm. What a concept !
