Back In The Day….

Being that my age—and that of the planet—are about the same—a friend of mine sent me one of those “Back in The Day” comparison things that make the rounds on the Internet…

You know the stuff I’m talking about….

Quips like back in 1956, gasoline costs 29 cents a gallon, and a Popsicle was a nickel…

And it got me to thinking— just WHAT was so great about those days?

A new car cost $2,000 dollars.

Yeah, it did. But, in a bad accident, you’d surely die because it had NO seat belts and the windshield was a piece of plate glass that if you hit it—it’d shatter into guillotine like slivers and rip you to shreds or decapitate you.

Almost nothing was padded—-and the steering column could ram through your chest in an accident because it didn’t collapse on impact.

Plus, you paid extra for things like a heater, radio and a side view mirror.

Cigarettes cost a 25 cents a pack.

Yep.. and nearly everyone smoked—including young kids.

And when you got a smoking related illness, there wasn’t a lot of help the doctors could give you—except to advise you on how much time you had to get your affairs in order.

A new 21-Inch TV cost $215 dollars.

But, what could you watch on that TV?

There were only three networks—if you were lucky enough to live someplace that HAD three TV stations in range.

Reception was spotty.

Programming was in black-and-white, and stations had limited broadcasting hours—many of them signing off by 11pm.

~~~~~~
Those are just a few of the comparisons between then and now…And though I lived through those times—- I’m pretty darn glad they’re just a memory…
Now—-it’s time for some shameless self promotion….
In the last 37 Days, we’ve had over 2-thousand visitors… Not bad for a little blog that’s only been about since September 7th….
(Of course, we didn’t start keeping accurate track of visitors till November 5th as you can see on the blog stats that are located on the sidebar at the right.)
All that being said—I want to once again thank all of you making this blog part of your daily routine.
Don’t be afraid to leave a comment. Your views are always welcome here, whether you agree with me or not.
And yes, as promised a few posts ago, I will continue to profile places where YOU come from on an occasional basis.
How ’bout the chain emails circulating that are entitled, “If you grew up in New England…” Have you seen those? I love getting them! Brings back so many memories of my days as a Yankee (for you Yankee fans out there that is SO not what I mean :D ).
